Functional Movement Screening

What are the benefits of our Basic Movement Assessments?

Your basic movement assessment can be delivered using differing protocol depending on what it is we are trying to achieve. One of our most endorsed assessments is the FMS.
The FMS allows our team to begin the process of functional movement pattern assessment in individuals without recognised pathologies.

These fundamental movement patterns are designed to provide observable performance of basic locomotor, manipulative and stabilising movements. The tests place the individual in extreme positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable if appropriate stability and mobility is not utilised.

It has been observed that many individuals who perform at very high levels during activity are unable to perform these simple movements. These individuals should be considered to be utilising compensatory movement patterns during their activities, sacrificing efficient movements for inefficient ones in order to perform at high levels. If these compensations continue, then poor movement patterns will be reinforced, leading to inefficient or poor biomechanics and the possibility of injury.

The functional movement screen can help:

  • Identify physical imbalances, limitations, and weaknesses
  • Restore and improve optimal movement required for fitness and athletic performance
  • Create bespoke integrated training and conditioning programmes for specific results
  • Improve fundamental movement patterns with simple corrective exercises

Who can use the FMS?

  • Clients wanting to increase their physical capacity
  • Rehabilitation clients post-hospital-treatment wanting to return to their sport or activity
  • Athletes wanting to improve functional performance and reduce risk of injury
  • Sports teams wanting to improve athlete functional performance and reduce risk of injury rate and recurrence
  • Anyone looking to improve their movement capabilities in everyday life or activity

Key Points

Communication – The FMS utilises simple language, making it easy to communicate clearly about progress and treatment.

Evaluation – The screen effortlessly identifies asymmetries and limitations, diminishing the need for extensive testing and analysis.

Standardization – The FMS creates a functional baseline to mark progress and provides a means to measure performance.

Safety – The FMS quickly identifies dangerous movement patterns so that they can be addressed. It also indicates an individual’s readiness to perform exercise, so that realistic goals can be set and achieved.

Corrective Strategies – The FMS can be applied at any fitness level, simplifying corrective strategies for a wide array of movement issues. It identifies specific exercises based on individual FMS scores to instantly create customised treatment plans.

Outcome Measures – If you are experiencing pain while under going the assessment you will be directed to take our advanced solution gait analysis assessment within our sister practice Elevate Physiotherapy Clinic. Click here for more information on that assessment.
